FAQs

  1. What does abrasive blasting mean?

Sandblasting, shot blasting, etc., are all terms commonly used to describe abrasive blasting. It is the process of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface or remove surface contaminants. Typically compressed air is used to propel the blasting media.

  2. What type of blasting media do you use?

We mainly use Black Diamond Coal Slag. It’s recyclable and efficient.

  3. Can you use other types of media?

Absolutely, we have access to many different types depending on your needs.

  4. Does a part need to be sandblasted?

We believe that sandblasting is the superior way to prep a part for coating. It is crucial the part be clean and etched to achieve maximum powder adhesion.

  5. Will you powder coat a piece without sandblasting it?

No. Prepping metal for coating is a non-negotiable. We cannot offer our quality guarantee without it.

  6. I have large pieces that I cannot fit on my truck/trailer, can you pick up?

Yes! In fact, we only pickup and deliver. All you need to do is contact us and we will take care of the entire process.

  7. Do you use a rust inhibitor?

No, not generally. Rust inhibitors are only needed if the piece is wet or will be exposed to moisture. Abrasive blasting completely removes surface contaminants on it’s own, therefore is never exposed to moisture during the prepping stages. Are pieces are directly powder coated after abrasive blasting.

  8. What is a “wash system”?

A wash system generally means a company is prepping the item with different liquids mean to clean and etch. Each company has a different method, so always ask them to specify their process. If each stage is not done properly, the powder will not stick/adhere properly to the metal.

  9. What are the correct washing stages?

Each powder coating company will specify the process required for their powder to adhere properly. We use IFS Coatings primarily and their process is as follows: Cleaning with heated cleaning agent, Rinse with Deionized fluid or reverse osmosis water (dry quickly to avoid flash rust), Condition to maintain pH level, apply zinc phosphate, Rinse again with Deionized fluid or reverse osmosis water, apply Sealer, Rinse again with Deionized fluid or reverse osmosis water, Dry part as quickly as possible to avoid flash rusting.
